When kids have the weekend free from school, chances are they're ready to let loose and have some fun. Whether you've got a house full of friends from class or your child is stuck indoors due to some undesirable weather conditions, having a project ready to go at the drop of a hat will always come in handy for parents. Instead of throwing some coloring books and crayons in front of kids - providing them with a more fun and involved project is a great idea. In this project, great for kids 6 and up, you can let kids truly express themselves while putting some of those old magazines you've had sitting around to use. In this project, you'll need a stack of old magazines, glue or glue sticks (glue sticks are usually much less messy!), kid-safe scissors, and some construction paper. If you have older kids, giving them some markers and glitter glue (stay away from loose glitter, it can be a real headache to clean up) can help to make the project more detailed for them.
Before you let kids start making their personality collages, make sure you prepare their work area properly. Place a small bin either in the center of the table or on the floor for them to throw paper scraps into rather than just letting them fall. Encourage kids to clean up as they go so that when they're done, they will have very little to put away. Once you've prepared their work area, let kids start going through the magazines and cutting out pictures and words for their collage. Challenge them to cover every little space of their construction paper and choose things that describe them as a person (what do they like to do? Who are their favorite celebrities? What sports do they like to play?). Another good precaution to take, especially if you have a few kids working on the project, is to write their name on the back of their piece of construction paper so there's no room for mix-ups.

Once kids have created their masterpieces, encourage a little show and tell session - even if it's only you and your child. Ask them to explain why they chose the items and words that they did. Parents will get a chance to learn about their children and their friends and the kids may learn things about their peers that they never knew before. It's a great way to allow kids to learn a little bit about themselves while giving them the opportunity to express themselves freely and creatively. You can move the project outdoors if the weather is nice, but if it's a particularly windy day - it's probably better to stay inside to prevent collage pieces from being carried away by the wind. Once kids are done with their project, parents can proudly display the new artwork on the kitchen fridge or even give kids the supplies to safely hang their art on their bedroom wall or door. Allowing kids to display what they've created in a space that they see everyday is a great reminder that you're proud of what they do - and they should be to. To kids, it's these small details that matter and taking little steps like these to show them that you care can mean the world to them.
A project like this is always right at your fingertips. Never again will you have to drop everything and run to the craft store to keep an arsenal of kids entertained for the afternoon. By utilizing everyday items right inside the house, you can keep the kids busy and happy while you enjoy the weekend.
