When you are stocking your shelves with storage foods for disaster preparedness, try to keep the same foods you eat everyday. Doing this will increase your comfort level if you must use them because you are already familiar with heir taste and preparation. Make it easy on yourself and your family and buy items you are comfortable with.
If you choose to go the route of freeze dried or lots of dried goods you will have to have more water available. Freeze dried foods; while they taste good and are light weight will require a lot of water to re-hydrate them. But it can be desired to have something like a pancake mix that you just add water to because this is a high density food that can fill you up.

If you buy storage food that comes in a can you would have an easier food to prepare or you could eat it right out of the can if unable to heat it. You could store at least three days worth of canned goods that you could rotate with your daily meals so you always have cans on your shelf that are not expired, just make sure you replace whatever you take from your stash.
Don't forget your water; this is actually more important than your food. You can go awhile with out eating but water is an absolute must. Keep bottles of water that you have either bought or put into containers your self. You should have at least a gallon of water per person per day. You should also have a way of purifying water by either boiling, filtering or by chemical means.
It does not take much to put away three days worth of food, you can buy a little at a time if need be. If you have the room shoot for more than three days so you will have a little more of a comfort zone.
