Garage Storage Cabinet - What to Choose

Attributed to online shopping services, we get to save a lot of time for traveling to search for the right garage storage cabinets.

Kids Room Storage Bins

We can utilize this convenience to easily match for the cabinet's dimension, the material and that style that we need rather than wandering inside a large store and wondering can one of the cabinet fits in our room.

Kids Room Storage Bins

There is a variety of choices for you to choose online. You can have a five-foot tall garage storage starter system, which is a tall vertical cabinet that offers space for long items. It has a smaller cabinet with shelves inside and three drawers for frequently used tools.

If you prefer cabinets that are less expensive, you can go for a utility storage wall which is normally used to keep paints and chemicals, or a utility trunk which is a best choice for kids' toys. Both cost only around 0.

Meanwhile, if you are a gardener, you should probably get an open wall storage cabinet. You can keep your gardening materials and items that is not thoroughly dried yet in the cabinet without worrying about the musty odor and mold growth.

Finally, the garage storage cabinet can also fit in laundry room and utility room. One of the examples would be the Elite garage storage cabinet system by PrePac. With its 16 inches depth cabinet, it provides adjustable shelves, heavy-duty drawers, and a six ways adjustable European-style hinges. In addition, it can function as a work surface.

Last but not least, please do not focus only on the aesthetic value of the garage storage cabinet when you are selecting. The most important point is whether it can protect your item and free your garage from cluttering.

Organizing a Child's Closet and Room

Storage Racks: Adding shelving to your child's closet can create places for all of those little things that you do not necessarily need to hang.

Kids Room Storage Bins

Stacking Bins: Bins are easily accessible by children and color coordinating or labeling each bin makes cleaning up a snap.

Kids Room Storage Bins

Linen Storage: Children often have a lot of extra sheet sets and comforters. Making a space for extra linen storage can keep it from spilling over into a clothing area. You may want to use crates up on shelves to keep them separate. Another option is to put them in large shallow containers underneath the bed.

Laundry Hamper: Make sure that your child has easy access to a laundry hamper. Ones that match their room decorations will encourage them to actually use it. Teach them to put their clothes in as part of their morning and night time routine. Then, when it is full, they can help do the laundry.

Cabinet: Adding cabinets to a child's room can be relatively inexpensive. Cabinets make great spots for keeping games, puzzles, art supplies and books. If you have a young child or a baby, you can keep diaper changing materials, out of reach medicines, humidifiers and thermometers in a cabinet, safely out of sight and reach.

Nets: Nets are great for getting all of those stuffed animals off the floor and out of the toybox. They can really take up a lot of space. Putting them in a net also keeps them out where your child can easily pick which one they want to sleep with at night. Plus, the net makes a fun place to play stuffed animal basketball.

Pocket Organizer: Pocket organizers are great for shoes, but they can also be used for a plethora of other children's needs. Mittens and gloves, socks, small cars or building blocks, art supplies, you name it. As kids get older, it seems like the pieces of their toys get smaller and smaller. See-through pockets make organizing tiny pieces a snap.

Hooks and Clips: Hooks and clips can help keep backpacks, coats and scarves off the floor. Ball caps, book bags and anything that can hang can be placed on a hook. Then, not only is it put away, but it's easily accessible for quick bolts out the door. Wet winter coats are able to dry without getting other clothing wet.

Children's Hangers: Using children's hangers will help you get the longest life out of your child's clothes. Adult hangers can stretch out the shoulders of your kid's clothing. Getting exciting colors of children's hangers that match your child's room can make the closet more a part of their decorations. Using childrens hangers will encourage your child to hang their own clothes.

Hot Kids Playroom Design Tips

Designing the perfect playroom for your kids takes time and planning, but once it's done it will bring you hours of quiet time in the rest of your house. Isn't that worth it! There is an actual formula you can follow to make sure you create an environment that entices your kiddies to want to play and play and play. This doesn't necessarily have to cost an arm and a leg. This can be done by choosing the right kid's furniture first, then getting the fun stuff at discounted rates at flea markets, garage sales or thrift shops and setting up the room in just a way that your kids will want to spend hours in there.

Kids Room Storage Bins

First Steps in Planning your Playroom Design

Kids Room Storage Bins

Write a List of your Kid's Favorite Hobbies: Does your child like to draw, paint, play music, do puppet shows, play board games, do puzzles, play sports, watch TV and play video games etc... Make this list very extensive to include everything your child enjoys doing.

Write a List of Items you can Get that Match your Child's Hobbies: If your child likes to draw and paint, consider getting an easel, craft table or art station. If your child likes to do puppet shows get a small puppet theater and some puppets or improvise and get puppets and a cardboard box. If games and puzzles are your child's thing then put board games and puzzles on the list. If your kid is really into video games, consider getting a TV for the playroom and if sports are a priority, you could get an over the door nerf basketball hoop, dart board, ping pong or pool table, depending on how much space you have to work with. If your child's a musical genius, why not invest in some bongo drums, guitar or karaoke machine.

Second Step is Choosing the Right Kid's Furniture for the Room

Now that you have a list of hobbies and things that match, it's time to consider your child's comfort. First, assess the room size. If it's large then you can create specific play stations around the room which is actually the best way to set-up a playroom to really encourage lots of playtime. If the room is a little smaller, be creative and create a few separate play areas combining several hobbies. In a larger space, make one corner dedicated to art, another to music, another to reading, another to puppet shows and entertaining and so on.

Important! *** Kids don't play with things they can't see, so it's imperative to make sure you set-up the room so that all of the fun stuff is in clear view.

That being said, it's also important to create a comfortable place to play. If your child enjoys reading then consider getting a kid's chair with a reading lamp, so he has his own special reading spot. You could even combine the reading and art area, by putting a kid's table and chair set in the room and shelves with art supplies on one side and books on the other. This way he could use the table and chair set for both hobbies.

Next, if your playroom has a TV then you'll need some seating. If you plan to use the room too, you should consider a couch or chairs that are big enough for adults, but if it's strictly a kid space then consider getting cute lounge chairs made for kids. Get enough so that visiting friends have a place to sit too.

Remember, you'll also need some storage shelves to hold the toys and games, so consider this when looking at kid's furniture and get a storage unit for each play station in the room. Open shelves are the best so that kids can see their toys. Dark Bins are a No-No, because a toy out of sight is a toy out of mind and toys in non-clear bins will get forgotten!

Once you've figured out what kid's furniture you need and which themes you'll use in each play station, it's time to search for the fun stuff.

On to Flea Markets, Thrift Shops and Garage Sales you Go!

Now that you have the room set up, kid's furniture in place, and your plan of what you need, it's time to go shop using your handy list. If you've decided to create music, art, game and reading stations in the playroom then consolidate items from your original list in just those categories. Head to the store or flea market and start looking around for things on your list.

Good Idea!***Consider creating a playroom when it's close to your child's birthday then send out a list of specific items you'd like people to get that go along with your playroom theme. This is a cost effective way to create the perfect play space for your child and if he gets things for his birthday he'll be more apt to want to play with them.

Last Step to Creating the Perfect Playroom for your Kids

This may sound a bit hokie, but go with it because it works. Stand in the center of the playroom. Close your eyes and picture each play space separately. Think about the fun toys, games or supplies you bought for each spot. Now picture how the items need to be displayed to really entice your child to play with them. Do you want puppets hanging on a tree stand or pegs on the wall? Having puppets cutely hanging on the wall would definitely entice your child to play with them often. Do you want art supplies in clear bins so your child knows exactly where his paints are? Do you want musical instruments hung on hooks or on open shelves, so they're easily accessible when your little musician wants to play some tunes? Do you want books on a shelf that's right next to the reading chair? The placement of toys, games and supplies is essential in creating the best playroom possible!

Final Thoughts: When creating your child's playroom, put yourself in his place. Design the room to provide effortless play time, making everything easily accessible and out in the open. Provide a spot where the fun can take place such as: an art table, reading chair, rock n roll stage, puppet theater, game table etc... Kids have huge imaginations. They love to play and play and play and if you give them a room that's made to spark imagination, inspire musical talents and encourage fun hobbies then your child will blossom into a thriving adult in later years and you'll get to enjoy some peace and quite along the way.

Helping Your Children Organize Their Bedrooms

How many times have you heard "mom I don't know where to put this?" My kids also love the phrase "my closet is too full". I'd like to share some tips on helping your child organize their room.

Kids Room Storage Bins

Closets - Whenever you buy new clothes, get rid of some old clothes. Children grow and clothing through usage wears out. Even though my kids say "but I wear everything", when we really go through their closets, we always find clothes that either don't fit or are worn out. If they group like items, they're much more likely to be able to find what they're looking for. Group all their shirts together, all their pants together etc. We use plastic storage bins for the shelf in their closets. These bins are clearly labeled so that we can see exactly what's inside. I don't mind stacked bins as long as the bins are labeled and kept organized. The floors of their closets are used mostly for shoes and backpacks. I don't mind buying new shoes, but the same rules apply to shoes that apply to clothes, we need to throw out what doesn't fit and what has worn out.

Kids Room Storage Bins

Bookcases - We have lots of bookcases in our house. I probably have more than the kids. I really like bookcases. However, bookcases are a haven for clutter and items we just don't know what to do with. Usually once a month or so, we all choose a few shelves and we go through them, getting rid of those items we no longer need and putting away the items we believe we do still need. Old books need to be given away, sold online or traded in at the used bookstore. Once you've read the book, unless you truly believe you'll read it again, it needs to go. There are exceptions like the Harry Potter series. We have every book in the series and I'm certain those will be passed down to the next generation. This is the exception to the rule and we don't have a lot of exceptions. Some schoolwork can be saved but most of it can be recycled. There are not a lot of papers that are needed for the next year. If you have long essays, yes, save them. They took a lot of work and we're all proud of the work done. However, pieces of paper from homework, old tests etc. are only necessary if they'll be used to study for a future exam. At the end of the school year those items need to be tossed, less the essays we already spoke about. If you keep the bookcases clear of the clutter, you can almost always find what you're looking for and even display your knickknacks in a way that you'll be able to enjoy them.

Night stands - Both of my kids have night stands. They have a clock and other assorted stuff on the top. It's the drawers I want to see kept organized. I personally keep a pair of glasses, tissues and a few other things in my drawer. Both of my girls wear glasses. I believe that drawer is the perfect place to keep their glasses. Though they wear contacts, they need their glasses when they wake up in the morning. That drawer is also a great place to keep your current reading book and your journal. These are items you might want when you are in bed.

Under the Bed - Have you looked under your child's bed recently? I am always amazed at what my younger daughter tries to store under there. I've found old books, old clothes, one shoe and even old food. Of course I've told her many times that none of this is ok. Today, they make many storage bins that slide in right under your bed. These are great for storing off season clothing or other items you absolutely want to keep but don't use year round. I'm actually ok with big bulky current year text books hanging out under the bed, as long as it's a temporary storage situation.

If you can keep these 4 areas organized, you're well on your way to having a room where most everything can be found and enjoyed.

Creative Storage Solutions

When the things in your home start crowding in around you and you're short on cash, it's time to come up with some creative storage solutions. Don't be afraid to think "out of the box". You're the only one who has to know where everything is stored.

Kids Room Storage Bins

- A cedar chest can be used for blanket storage. I don't have enough cupboard space for blankets, and they all fit nicely in the chest. The chest also doubles as a coffee table in the living room. The blankets are easily accessible and can easily be folded up and put away at a moment's notice.

Kids Room Storage Bins

- My daughter and I found an old apple crate (fruit labels still attached) with a shelf built into it at a yard sale for about . The crate is a great storage area for books and doubles as a nightstand.

- An old china cupboard displays dishes I didn't want to hide away in the kitchen cupboards and also provides extra storage space for linens and silverware. This cabinet was found neglected in grandma's basement and was brought back to life with a little sanding and new paint. It is now a beautiful addition to our dining room.

- Large plastic containers are great for organizing kids' rooms. My daughter had a lot of "stuff" stashed all over her room, and we gathered it all up and put all her arts and crafts supplies in one big container, and her writing materials in another. Homework is organized in a plastic container set up as a file organizer, organized by subject.

- Look outside for creative storage ideas. We had to clean out our spare bedroom and had no idea where to put our camping equipment. We don't have a garage or a shed, so an old camper shell turned out to be the perfect solution. All our camping gear fit into it with room to spare, freeing up more room in the house.

- Organize seasonal decorations in large plastic containers. Plastic wears better than cardboard and if you buy similarly sized containers, they will stack easily and be easy to store.

- A long flat underbed-type plastic storage container is great for organizing holiday gift wrap. With the wrapping paper I store scissors, tape, gift bags, ribbon, bows, and extra cards. This container fits perfectly under one of our living room couches and all my gift-giving supplies are together in one place!

- Shop for furniture that doubles as extra storage space. We bought a cabinet for my husband's 55 gallon aquarium and the entire bottom part of the cabinet is open for approximately six feet of additional storage space.

New Ideas for Using Storage Bins

Storage bins come in every shape and size. With so many options it's hard to resist the urge to organize your home with these necessities. Yes, I said necessities! Walk into any room of your home, open any closet or drawer, peek into your garage, or wander into your shed, and you will instantly see how useful a system of storage bins is. No longer will you have to waste time looking for something when it is neatly organized and labeled. In fact, I have relatives whose system is so precise that each box is labeled and cataloged. It takes nano-seconds to find exactly what they need.

Kids Room Storage Bins

Not everyone will go to these lengths to get their house in order. However, most everyone will benefit from using storage bins to keep their "stuff" from over-running the house. Here are just a few suggestions:

Kids Room Storage Bins

Use shoe-sized bins to house your shoes. Shoe boxes that your footwear comes in are all different shapes and sizes. They are made of cardboard which will wear down and could attract bugs. Imagine getting two sizes of boxes, one for regular shoes, and another size for larger shoes such as boots. They can be purchased clear so that you can see the shoes inside and you don't have to rummage through the boxes to find out which pair are hidden beneath the lids. As an added benefit, the shoes will stay in better condition because they are not being squished or exposed to dust.

Use under bed storage bins for items used only seasonally. This may include wrapping paper, crafting items blankets, or winter wear such as mittens and boots. It may not make sense to donate or discard such items even if you use them once or twice a year; however, you want to place them safely out of the way.

Use storage bins and garage racks in your garage. The garage can be a catch-all kind of space that can quickly get out of control. Tame the clutter beast by starting a system of racks and bins. Clearly label each bin. For example, you may have a bin for camping equipment, bike equipment, sports balls, holiday decorations, and car wash supplies. Plastic storage bins are a better choice, especially in the garage, to keep bugs that prefer to live in paper or cardboard away.

Use storage bins in your hall or linen closet. If you are a smart shopper, you may stock up on often used toiletries such as deodorant, shampoo and soap. Make sure that you can easily find them by putting them in various bins.

Use storage bins to get your kids organized. It's very easy, and a great amount of fun, to set up a system where each child gets a certain color of storage bin. This has endless possibilities. Keep the house tidy by simply putting your child's belonging in their own bin. They then become responsible for getting their possessions from the bin to the correct place in their room.

Closet Organization Tools

Garment Racks: Garment racks can be good organizational tools. They help to evacuate bulky or rarely used items from your closet. You can still access the items on the garment rack, but you can hide it away in an extra room, freeing up space in your closet.

Kids Room Storage Bins

Shoe Racks: The type of shoe rack you choose can depend on what space you have where and also how many shoes you own. Over the door shoe racks are good if you don't have very much space. Some people like to build a system of cubbies that can hold shoes from the floor to the ceiling in a closet without taking up much space. Shoe racks that sit at the bottom of the closet are most popular. This is where most people have some space without redesigning the whole closet. Shoe racks do not have to be an eye-sore either. They come in beautiful furniture-like designs that do not even look like they are shoe organizers.

Kids Room Storage Bins

Closet Organizers: Hanging shelves can add a lot of space to your closet and give you special places to put all of those little things. You can add drawers and shelves to your closet to eliminate the need for dressers or to add extra storage to your room. Some people like to use baskets, bins and crates to hide away messy looking items. Use large bins for seasonal storage and put them away on a top shelf. This will keep those items safe from dust and moths.

Specialty Hangers: There are all kinds of specialty hangers to help you organize those odds and ends. Tie and belt accessory hangers are really useful and inexpensive. Just one can free up a dresser drawer and keep your ties wrinkle free. Tiered hangers are great for making space. You can usually hang about five pairs of pants on a tiered hanger, another space saving option. Tiered hangers may have clips that you can hang shorts or skirts from, saving even more space.

Clothes Hangers: Your hanger selection should be made with a few things in mind. First, consider the space that you have. Slim-Line hangers take up very little space. Wooden hangers are beautiful, help your clothes hold the right shape and are so durable that they could possibly last your entire lifetime. These are best for suits and coats, but most people just like them for their beauty and durability. Glam Hangers are beaded in all different colors to make a kid's closet really special. Velvet coated hangers are really great for items that can easily slip. Satin clothes hangers are great for lingerie and other delicate fabrics.

Tips For Choosing Kids Lunch Bags

Packing your child's lunch bag with healthy foods may be as important as exercise in this age of growing obesity and diabetes in children. I have discovered a number of excellent tips for making healthy lunches and snacks for children. The most important rule is to only use insulated lunch bags. You can pack a lot more fresh ingredients into your kid's lunch by choosing a insulated lunch box that also comes with a freezer pack.

Kids Room Storage Bins

Insulated Lunch Bags for Kids will Keep Food Fresh.
Before you decide on your choice of insulated lunch totes, let's look at good ways to make healthy lunches. First of all, you must be organized. It helps a great deal if you write out a menu or some recipes since you then know what you will have to buy. Spend some time making items for the school week ahead of time. Hard boil eggs, slice vegetables, make trail mix, and do other prep depending on your menu. Spend a little time prepping again midweek to insure freshness and to vary the choices. Kids get bored with the same diet all week.

Don't Send Too Much Food to School.
Another thing to consider, don't overestimate how much food your child will eat. School lunchroom workers say that kids throw away a great deal of the food sent with them. A sandwich with four ounces of protein plus several servings of fruit or vegetables are plenty for elementary school children. Avoid sugar treats and serve fruits with something fun like stickers or a cartoon. Kids should understand that dessert doesn't need to follow every meal.

Involve your Child in Making the Menu.
Get your kids involved in food choices. Take your child to the grocery store and see what kind of food they pick out. Kids are more likely to eat fruit and vegetables if they make the choice. Pack small containers of crackers, cheese, tuna salad, ham, etc. and let your kid make his own mini sandwiches. Include some containers of vegetables with dip.

Say No to Lead and BPA.
You must make sure your lunch tote or lunch box is lead free and water bottles are BPA free. Most manufacturers have been warned and made changes but still some lunch bags contain lead. If the lining of a lunch bag is PVC, there is a good chance that it does contain lead.

Some Kids Lunch Bags We Recommend.
You will like the convenience of the Cool Tote Lunch Sacks since they are easy to clean at the kitchen sink, fold for simple storage and come in a variety of colorful themes. Of course, if your child is a fan of cartoon character boxes you could choose Hello Kitty, Thomas the Tank or Sesame Street Elmo. These cartoon lunch boxes have plenty of room to hold containers and come with a water bottle. Also popular right now are lunch boxes that come with washable reusable containers. The Laptop Lunch System and a new arrival, the Easy Lunch Box both include these reusable containers. If you use a Cool Tote Lunch Sack or other lunch tote, use different sized reusable plastic containers similar to Tupperware to accomplish the same objective. The Built NY Tasty Lunch Tote is also a great item for kids.

Children's Bedroom Decorating Ideas

Ideas for decorating children's bedrooms are nearly endless. Children love bright colors and patterns and enjoy having their rooms decorated with scenes and pictures of cartoon characters or superheroes. There also exist a wide variety in bedding, throw pillows, rugs, wall coverings and more that can all be used to decorate children's rooms.

Kids Room Storage Bins

When decorating children's bedrooms it may be a good idea to center the design around creating a room that is unique to the child and reflects its personality. Kids like to spend time in their bedroom, reading, playing or watching television. When designing a room for a child you should ask them what they would like their room to look like. Give them several choices and make them choose between colors, fabrics and furniture. You should also make sure that you provide a place for the child to store its toys and games.

Kids Room Storage Bins

When considering a childen's bedroom design storage will play an important part. There are lots of ways to provide this and avoid clutter, even without using any shelves at all. Fun storage options include things like wicker baskets, plastic containers or bed drawers. Window treatments should be kept relatively simple and you should avoid using long drapes and dangerous cords. Simple toppers can be used to keep windows open. Providing a nightlight will often be necessary and these exist in many different patterns and colors.

A child's bedroom should feel like it is unique and reflects its young owner's personality and taste. The best way to achieve this is by asking the child to help you make design decisions.

Plastic Storage Containers Make Art Project Day Fun

My kids love getting together a few Saturdays a year to spend the afternoon making arts and crafts. This is tons of fun for the kids, who get to use their imagination and creativity along with colorful, interesting bits of supplies to build projects with their own hands. Unfortunately, it can be messy and chaotic, too. And as the parent involved with the project, it certainly comes with its fair share of hassles. When the kids don't want to share the resources it can get very ugly.

Kids Room Storage Bins

One of my methods for getting around the sharing problem is to provide each of them with a full crafts kit of their own.

Kids Room Storage Bins

Each gets their own set of plastic storage containers, decorated by their own hand. I help them accept ownership for the status of the supplies (is the glue dried out? Is there no more tape?) because they each have their own plastic storage containers; therefore, if the glue is dry or there are no more googly eyes in their packet, there's no one else to blame.

We try to keep several staples on hand and then experiment with a handful of other interesting supplies. Glue sticks, glitter tubes, acrylic paints and brushes, pipe cleaners, construction paper, scissors and markers are part of everyone's kit. Then they customize their remaining plastic storage containers with items which interest them like foam cut-outs, princess stickers, beads, etc.

With all that glue and glitter, I was concerned about our kitchen floor. Then I picked up a large drop cloth to protect the finish and give them some wiggle room for mistakes.

I keep a few plastic storage containers filled myself, only with different items. A hot glue gun and glue sticks, dried flowers and a grapevine wreath let me be creative and make something beautiful for the front door.

Outdoor Toy Box Shed Organizing - Tips & Ideas to Help You Organize Your Sheds Used For Storing Toys

Whether your kids are young or already entering their teenage years, you know full well just how much "stuff" can accumulate outside in the yard. Using a storage shed as an outdoor toy box though, is a wonderful way to help keep your yard clean and clutter free, and it also teaches the children from young ages to pick up after themselves.

Kids Room Storage Bins

Using your outdoor storage shed as a toybox is not overly difficult either, but you will want to organize it a bit so you can make the most of the room you have, and so the kids will know where their outdoor toys properly go.

Kids Room Storage Bins

Now the first thing you'll want to do when organizing your toy shed, is to designate various zones inside. One zone for instance, should be reserved for bicycles and riding toys. This area should have things "parked" in a logical manner, so it will be easier for the kids to get their toys out when they want them, but put them away when they're done too. Be sure not to pile things on or around the wheeled toys, otherwise someone could get hurt when trying to navigate the area.

Use large plastic bins, buckets or trash cans for storing and organizing smaller toys. You could separate these by child if you'd like, and put a name on each one so everyone has their own space. Alternatively, you could have one bin marked "pool" to use for pool toys, another marked "balls" to store all the various playing balls in, and so on.

Put pool safety equipment in locations of their own though, and make them easily reachable. Arm floats and safety vests for smaller children for instance, can be hung on the wall right by the door, or put into an easily reachable container all their own.

Putting up shelves in your shed is another excellent way to help organize smaller items, or those toys reserved for adults or the larger children. Yard and lawn games and supplies can go on these shelves for instance, such as golf tees and balls, ping pong equipment, and badminton supplies.

Nets, clubs and rackets can be organized easily by hanging them either on the wall, or from the ceiling in the corners.

Alternative Uses For Your Living Room

Like most colonials, our home has a family room and a living room. And like most homeowners, we spend a lot more time in our family room than our living room. In fact, my 7 year old still gets confused when I use the term "living" room. It's now just known as the "red" room in our house.

Kids Room Storage Bins

With some minor changes and a lot of inspiration, you can turn your living room into something you'd actually live in! Here are some possible uses and design tips to help you get started:

Kids Room Storage Bins

Home office - Home Office means different things to different people. It could be a place to pay bills and file paperwork, or a place for kids to do homework, or you may run a business out of your home. Whatever your definition, focus your design around the function of the room.

Provide a clear surface on which to work. It's easy for a desk or table to become overrun with "stuff" resulting in no place to actually work. Tight for space? How about a table that drops down from the wall when needed (like a Murphy bed)? Add a comfortable desk chair that is adjustable and doesn't squeak (trust me on this one!). If your room has carpet, consider a plastic floor protector to help you wheel around easier. Add lots of hidden storage, but be sure to clearly label your storage units so you know where to find things. Lighting is key! You will need overhead as well as good task lighting. If there is no overhead light, add some up-lighting. Select functional accessories that add personality by do not cutter the space. But be careful not to make it too institutional - it's still your home, after all! Keep the palate light and bright to inspire energy. Minimize and secure cords as much as possible. Go wireless wherever possible.
Library - Love to read? Have a great book collection? Turn your living room into a cozy place to curl up with a good book! It's like having your own coffee house.

Add lots of shelving. Rather than just adding bookcases, consider customized bookshelves built around a window to create a window box seat. Not only will you get additional storage, you'll add a wonderful focal point to the room. Instead of a traditional sofa or loveseat, opt for two or three comfy club chairs (depending on space). Gather those chairs around a round glass-top coffee table with a wood shelf underneath to show off some of your favorite coffee table books. Provide task lighting for each reading chair. Pharmacy lamps are great for this. Make sure you also have enough lighting to see the books on the shelves. As a library, you can comfortably use darker paint to create warmth. Accessories - add a warm toned rug, soft throw blankets, and pepper the walls with black and white photography to create a coffee house feel.
Toy room - A toy room can be a great compromise between parents and kids in the eternal battle of toy clutter!

Opt for shelving with attractive bins that can hide the clutter inside them, and allow for pick-up in less than 5 minutes. Open storage looks messy, even when the room is picked up. Avoid a collection of mis-matched toy organizers - they look tacky! Make sure the room is comfortable for grown ups as well as kids -add a comfortable chair or loveseat. Add a kid-sized table and chairs. Tip: put a machine washable rug underneath to survive craft time! Keep the room bright with cheerful colors, but avoid "cutesy" - save that for their bedrooms. If your kids enjoy movies, add a TV and DVD player. Set clear rules for cleanup, and stick to them!
Media room - Do you enjoy watching movies? Create your own movie theater in the comfort of your own home!

Add French or pocket doors and light-blocking shades to create a dark, quiet environment on demand. Add a large screen TV with surround sound. Add a dimmer switch to better control the lighting. Add task lighting to allow for discreet multi-tasking while watching a movie. Depending on how many people will be watching the movies, add enough comfortable seating. Tip: use two loveseats angled at the corners of the room opposite the TV, and toss a couple bean bag chairs behind them for extra seating when necessary. For decor, just frame a few of your favorite movie posters and hang them on the walls. Don't forget the DVD organizer and a handy remote control holder!
Mud Room -Depending on the layout of your house, you could convert your living room into an oversized "holding cell" to accommodate coats, back packs, shoes, calendars, cleaning supplies, dog bed, pet food and much more. You get the idea!

Assign a "locker" to each family member (don't forget the family pet). Lockers provide vertical storage that makes good use of the space while hiding its cluttered contents. It's a great storage solution for jackets, purses, backpacks, and more. Lockers can be wood or metal, whichever you prefer. Add wall hooks for guest coats, umbrellas, etc. Add a shoe rack for wet or dirty shoes. Place vinyl placemats underneath to protect your floor. Create a mail box for each member of the family to control mail flow. Add a credenza or file cabinet to file all that mysterious paperwork that wanders into the house. Create a message center by painting a wall (or part of a wall) with magnetic and/or chalkboard paint. Make it "pop" by adding a large empty gold leaf frame! Add a colorful rug. Rather than get one large rug, opt for a couple smaller rugs that are machine washable. How about a small drop-leaf table and a couple chairs for small projects, or for putting boots on?
Stag room - What can I say? If you must have one, here are some ideas:

Add a pool table, and a dart board (if room). Include a bar and some bar stools. Opt for a darker paint color that won't show wear and tear. Display your favorite neon bar sign, deer head, or other prized possession. Add a juke box in the corner if you like. Don't forget the traditional "dogs playing poker" print!
Overwhelmed? Call an Interior Re-designer in your area. They specialize in making rooms work using what you already have. It's a very cost-effective way to bring new life to your old room.

It's time to start actually living in your "living" room!
